R.I.P. Eartha Kitt

Eartha Kitt, American actress, singer, and cabaret star died yesterday at age 81. She was best known for her song "Santa Baby" and her role as Catwoman on the 1960's Batman TV series.

♥♥♥♥

Academy Award-winning American director Orson Welles once called her the "most exciting woman in the world". Her persona is that of the ultimate

femme fatale. Readers may recognize her in the movie Holes as Madame Zeroni.

Eartha Kitt spoke out admirably on controversial issues, often doing performances for the benefit of HIV/AIDS research. She even caused a stir when she ma

de anti-war statements during a White House luncheon with Lady Bird Johnson 1968.

"I am a mother and I know the feeling of having a baby come out of my gut. I have a baby and then you send him off to war. No wonder the kids rebel and take pot." --Eartha Kitt

♥♥♥♥

Eartha was known for her striking looks, a mixture of her African, Cherokee, and German descent. However, she has said, I have never thought of mys

elf as a race. I have always thought of myself as a communicator who has no race”.

♥♥♥♥

She was nominated twice for Broadway's Tony Award: in 1978, as Best Actress (Musical) for "Timbuktu!"; and in 2000, as Best Actress (Featured Role - Musical) for "The Wild Party."

♥♥♥♥

“I do not have an act. I just do Eartha Kitt. Eartha Kitt is my act and I am still learning from her. Not that I want to be perfect. I do not believe in perfection. What do you do with perfection? I want to be whoever Eartha Kitt is until the gods take me wherever they take me.”

Damn. Fabulous.

Pink and Black

Pink and black: a fabulous combination. It's the perfect visual mix of tough and girly. I'm so into it right now. Probably because of my new hair ;]

Here's a few ways that I would love to wear it.

What color combinations are you feelin' right now?

Shoes :]

I heard through the grapevine that a girl in my school said I had the coolest shoes and was at the "top of the shoe list." Best. Compliment. Ever. hahaha

Yes, I am particularly obsessed with shoes. Here's one of my polyvore shoe collages of what I love right now.

Hmm, I'm sensing a few similarities here...perhaps I should search for a pair of pink and black polka dotted high top sparkly heels to purchase?!

Hairupdate :]

I was getting really bored with my hair, so I decided to change a few things. I got a slightly different cut, re-dyed it and added a pink streak! I love it. What do you think?

Sorry for the terrible pictures, haha.

Style Crush: Lady Gaga

I love Lady Gaga.
Her music videos have an awesome dance party vibe; her style is futuristic with a touch of 80's. Lady Gaga has fantastic makeup...and so much glitterrrrrr! Also, her lightning bolt symbol is awesome.

I officially have a style crush on her.

Photobucket

She's in New York on December 31. I sooo want to see her live. That would be the coolest New Year's Eve dance party ever.

Photobucket

Also, I love this video. Why don't I get invited to parties like that? haha ;]

What do you think of Lady Gaga? And who is your style crush this week? :]

What I Wore!

This is what I wore to my admissions interview at Parsons School of Design. :]

I was super-nervous, but acted enthusiastic and put-together. I don't want to say anything yet, but I think it went okay.

I always wear a hat when I want to be noticed or remembered!

Do you have a particular item that you like to wear when you want to be remembered?

Style as a Way of Living

I just want to say something up about Wishful Thinking.
You may see it as a fashion blog. However, I consider this to be a Style blog.
Dictionary.com defines "style" as a "distinctive mode of living".
I like to blog about all kinds of things that affect style: appearance, fashion, music, events, the small things. Life.

Which brings me to my next point. I may not be able to vote just yet, but I definitely have an opinion about the future of the country I live in. Which is why I want to quickly mention the 2008 Presidential election [Raise your hand if you saw this coming].

A lot of people my age figure, "I'm not old enough to vote, so what do I care about the election?" And I think that's ridiculous. I'm not going to discuss my personal views, but I think that everyone should have an opinion about their future. You may not think some things affect you, but they do. I also see a lot of people who have firm opinions on who they would like to be president, but they don't have adequate reasons to back it up. Please, don't be ignorant or uninformed! I'd like to encourage everyone to think hard about themselves and their own personal opinions. Research every side of every issue. Figure out what you stand for. And if you can vote, get out to the booths tomorrow and do it!

•Extra Love: My friend has a very interesting take on politics that he writes about in his blog We The Politics. [It's now linked in my sidebar.] He really knows his stuff and has an open mind. So check it out!  :]

Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon greatly influenced photography throughout his career. He was very interested in capturing the personality of a person in his portraits, rather than just capturing a likeness. He often shot his portraits in front of a plain white background to in order to focus on the emotion of the subject. Among some of his most famous photographs is this portrait of Marilyn Monroe:

Avedon, however, also recreated the idea of the fashion shoot. Instead of photographing fashion shots with the models standing emotionless and bored-looking, acting simply as a standing hanger for the clothes, he captured them with emotion
n and usually in action.

Here are some of my favorites:

Avedon was also the inspiration for Dick Avery, the fashion photographer played by Fred Astaire in the 1957 musical movie Funny Face.

He died October 1, 2004 in San Antonio, Texas while shooting for the New Yorker.

Project Playlist

I am a big fan of Project Playlist. It's a "social music experiment" that helps you find music hosted on the web. This enables you to set up a playlist using songs from on a variety of sites, and then listen to music from basically any computer with an internet connection. And it's completely legal and free. I use it in class all the time because ipods are banned at my school. :]

I have a really broad range of musical tastes, so if you're interested in checking out my weekly playlist, I'm posting it below: !

What are you listening to this week?

Things Involving Sports

My friend Jay recently created a sports blog and it is pretty awesome. I like it and I could never hope to be even half as much into sports as he is.

I've linked it on the side but thought it was worth making an actual post about. So if you like your sports with a side of clever, go on and check it it out here.

All I have to say to the Mets is: Come onnn. Really? -_-

October 2, 2008

It's October 2nd!

Halloween is such a fun holiday. Dressing up, staying out all night and the ultimate sugar rush is definitely something I'm into ! :]

So in honor of October and Halloween, here are some creepy-crazy runway looks from Armand Basi, Noki, and Gareth Pugh.

Love and Not-love

The title of the post is inspired by the book I'm currently reading, As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. It is absolutely the most confusing book I've ever read, but I like it. :]
Anyway...
Here is what I am loving and not loving in fashion this week.

Love!

♥ These We Who See lace-up boots. They are soo on my wishlist it's not even funny. They're kind of little house on the prairie but at the same time totally punk and trendy.
♥ maddd layers cinched with a belt. I'm partial to ginormous ones. :]
♥ Purple! It's the color of royalty ;]
♥ Big hair. Since I have naturally big hair, I'm loving this trend.

Not-Love

♠ I'm sorry to all of you die-hard Ugg believers, but I'm just not a fan of them for some reason. Especially with shorts, miniskirts, and other generally summery outfits.
♠ boots with fringe. no thankyouu.

That's all for now. What are you loving and not-loving in fashion right now?

What I Wore:

♥ Marc by Marc Jacobs skirt

best cupcakes ever:

Gala and Nubby looked so amazing! Now I want a tiara! :D

Rebecca Taylor at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 08

So today I went to see Rebecca Taylor's runway show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York! :]
This is what I wore:

♥ dress by Theory
♥ black tights
♥ Steven by Steve Madden boots [they're seriously my fave. and also i feel like the song "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by JET is about me when I wear them!]
♥ kate spade tote
♥ my mom's belt :]
♥ scarf, Jones New York

fab-o-maticcccc!

The inside of the tent was so cool; there were booths everywhere giving stuff away. I got some pretty cool swagggg and about a gazillion magazines. There were girls with evian shoes! with trays of water. When I arrived I got my name checked off the Mercedes list and then chilled in the Mercedes-Benz Star lounge with my gorgeous mom. The Rebecca Taylor show itself was fabulousss! There was kind of a hippie theme; the models all had headbands around their heads, there was a lot of flowiness and floral print.
Some pictures I took of the show:

So pretty!
Also, there were so many awesomelydressedpeople there.

Like him: isn't he so cute? I'm loving the shoes!

The buzz that swarms around the front row is so cool. And I saw Fern Mallis!

When I exited the tent there was a guy with a huge illustration of Anna Wintour that had signatures all over it. He said it was going to auction and asked me to sign it in black sharpie because people in the fashion industry signed it in red. I told him that one day I would legit work in fashion and whoever bought the picture would be glad they had my signature! ;]

Haha, that's enough coverage for now, I think :]

Lovelovelove,

Nikkidee!
